Alongside the beach runs the iconic Breakwall, where you can enjoy a peaceful walk surrounded by colourful painted rocks that have been decorated by locals and travellers over the years. It's also a top spot to catch sunrise or watch dolphins playing in the surf.
Port Macquarie Coastal Walk
Starting right from Town Beach, this 9km scenic track takes you all the way to Tacking Point Lighthouse. Along the way, you’ll pass beaches, rocky headlands, and hidden coves. It’s well-marked and offers a mix of paved and natural trails. You can do short sections if you're after a lighter walk, or complete the full journey for a rewarding half-day coastal hike with sweeping ocean views and opportunities for whale spotting in season.
Koala Hospital
A short 5 minute drive or a pleasant bike ride inland from Town Beach, this facility gives you a chance to see rescued koalas up close and learn about their care and conservation. Self-guided tours are welcome daily, and the grounds themselves are leafy and peaceful. It’s both an educational and heartwarming visit, especially for families or animal lovers.
Sea Acres Rainforest Centre
A little further south of the main beaches, Sea Acres offers an immersive experience in one of the last remaining coastal rainforests in New South Wales. The 1.3km elevated boardwalk takes you through lush canopy and past towering trees with interpretive signs explaining the flora and fauna. Guided tours and Aboriginal cultural experiences are also available for a deeper understanding of the area's natural and cultural history.
The Glasshouse
Located in the heart of Port Macquarie, around a 10 minute walk from Town Beach, The Glasshouse is the town’s cultural hub. It hosts rotating exhibitions, theatre performances, and creative workshops. Even if you’re just passing through, the architecture is worth a look, with its striking glass façade and open interior space.
Surfing & Bodyboarding
Town Beach and nearby Flynns Beach are ideal for both beginners and seasoned surfers. Local surf schools operate year round, offering group and private lessons. The waves here are usually manageable and the sandy bottom makes it safer for newcomers.
Jet Ski & Water Sports on Hastings River
Just beyond the Breakwall, you’ll find operators offering jet ski hire, stand-up paddleboarding, and kayaking along the Hastings River. These are a great way to explore the waterways, spot marine life, or just get the adrenaline flowing.
Paragliding & Scenic Flights
For the adventurous, tandem paragliding flights are sometimes available from nearby cliffs, giving a bird's eye view over the coast. Alternatively, scenic flights from Port Macquarie Airport offer a chance to take in the beaches and hinterland from above.
Bike Riding
There are several off road trails and shared pathways accessible within a short drive, including those at Lake Innes Nature Reserve and around the Kooloonbung Creek area. Bike hire is available in town if you don’t have your own.
